i'm really not sure what i watched last night. my brain is still going "whatthefuck??"

i know takashi miike is one of the most fucked up directors the world has ever seen. i've watched ichi the killer (koroshiya) and audition (ôdishon), and they were really great. and last night i watched his episode in the masters of horror series, "imprint." and jesusfuckingchrist it's brutal. he manages to cram a lot of pain and weirdness into just one hour.

that episode was banned from cable broadcast, and i can see why.

besides all that, though, the ending left me going "whaththefuck??" with a vengeance. it's so damn japanese. if you watch anime or japanese horror, you know exactly what i mean by that. i'm just not sure what happened. it's left open to interpretation. very open. more open than a whore's legs (sorry, the episode takes place in a brothel).

i plan to watch the extras on the dvd later. the "making of" featurettes and the commentary. maybe the commentary will shed some light on the ending. that's what i'm hoping for. "imprint" just twists reality and fantasy so damn much that i'm not sure where one ends and the other begins. which is the point.

oh, the acting was terrible. and it really should've been in japanese, because the girls' english wasn't great. but god, billy drago was just... awful. and some of it was the script, too. who goes "god... DAMMIT!" when they find out the love of their life is dead? who?? i just imagine in the buffy: tvs episode "passion" giles walking into his bedroom to see jenny lying in his bed with a broken neck... and he throws down the champagne bottle and yells "godDAMMIT!"... lol. yeah, sorry, that just doesn't work. the scene loses its power and just becomes laughable.

"imprint" was still quite good, though, and i recommend it to the people who can actually stomach that sort of thing... fans of takashi miike won't be disappointed. many other reviews call it the best episode in the masters of horror series. i wouldn't know because i've only seen one other episode ("jenifer") so far.

this was my pre-behind-the-scenes review. i'll probably discuss the movie more after i watch the commentary and what not. but i figured it'd be cheating to wait until after seeing inside the makers' heads to share my thoughts. plus the scenes are still freshly imprinted in my head. i'm really not sure if that's good or bad...
mood: wtf??

Aw man, your way tougher then i. I had some tell me Audtion was just a jappanes romantic comedy, and i feel broken for life. I couldn't even get through the whole thing, then he was the worst kind of creepy guy, and held my hand and wouldn't let me take it back. If he wasn't one of my residents and would have tottaly been fired for doing it, i rely would have like to have punched him the face to get the point across that you don't just hold on to peoples hands when they clearly don't want you too, i think thats a vauleabel life lesson for him.
